- In Germanic legends, Brunhild was a Valkyrie who lived on a mountain surrounded by a wall of flames. She said she would only marry a man brave enough to ride through the flames, so the hero Sigurd and Gunnar, the king of Burgundy, hatch a plan for Gunnar to win her hand. Gunnar tries and fails to endure the flames, so he and Sigurd switch bodies so that Sigurd can complete the task in his stead. Sigurd is successful and marries Brunhild, still in his disguised form, and the two men swap places again afterward. Brunhild later learns the truth as a bit of gossip from Sigurd's wife, and in her anger demands that Gunnar kill Sigurd, which he does.
