Siren's Song
Deep under the sea, there lived
a songstress named Siren who
had made music from the very
moment of her birth.
The songs she sang on the seafloor
became bubbles that floated up into
a shimmering light. But she always
wondered what that light was,
and where, exactly, her songs went.
One day, Siren followed the bubbles
and found they reached a world of
serene blue skies and a dazzling sun.
Faced with such a beautiful sight,
she could not help but express
her joy by bursting into song.
As she was singing in the waves,
a boy appeared on the shore.
"Your song is beautiful!" he cried.
This praise caused her to sing all
the louder-and because the
language of music has no barriers,
the girl from the sea and the boy
from the land became fast friends.
Several years passed, and the boy
grew into a young man. Soon, he told
the girl the time had come for him to
leave his town by the shore and
venture across the ocean.
As she sang a song to bless him
with safe passage on his journey,
his eyes shone with all the radiance
of a midsummer's night sky.
Several days after his ship left port,
it met with a most fearsome storm.
When the fish of the sea told Siren
that the ship was on the verge of
disaster, she rushed to the surface.
Her desperate song rang out in
the ceaseless rain as she sought
to use its echoes to find him.
Eventually she found him floating
amidst the cold ocean waves.
Taking his quickly cooling body
onto her back, she raced for
land as fast as she could travel.
When she finally reached land, she
cried out for help. Soon, the people
of a nearby village arrived and took
the young man into their care.
The young man's life was saved.
The worst was behind them,
and their tale would close with a most
happy ending... or so she thought.
One day, Siren used the power of
her song to save a young man who
had been lost at sea. Afterward,
she thought all would be well...
but there is more to the story.
Soon after the storm had passed,
the surviving sailors came to Siren
and accused her of great mischief.
"You bewitched the winds and
called that storm to sink our ship!"
they raged. "And all so you could
steal away that boy you love from
his own people!"
In truth, the wreck was the fault
of the sailors' own carelessness.
But they were loath to admit their
own failings, and soon the story they
told had been accepted as fact.
But as Siren began to protest their
falsehoods, she learned something
that shook her to the core:
Because of the accident, the young
man had lost the ability to hear.
When she learned this, her body went
numb. Somehow, she summoned the
strength to dive back into the cold
ocean depths, where she quickly
broke down into sobs.
But even as she cried, the lie of
the sailors continued to spread.
Soon, her life had become little
more than another terrifying
tale of the sea.
The more she tried to stifle her tears,
the more fell from her eyes.
The more she tried to convince
herself that she wasn't lonely,
the more alone she felt.
She had legs to run, but was too
terrified to move. She had a voice
for song, but could only sing verses
filled with melancholy--for she knew
he would never again hear them.
If she sang, her song would turn to
bubbles and vanish--but alas, the
same could not be said of her soul.
For she knew that no prince would
ever come to save her.
No doubt this story was doomed
to have a sad ending from the
start. And yet, she couldn't help
but hope that tomorrow might
bring happiness with it anyway.
She silently wished that she might
talk and sing in joy as she once did.
That she might live out a tale of her
own choosing once more...
